RCNA Church Addition
The Client, the Reformed Congregation in North America, celebrate their faith in an existing facility in Rosedale. It was apparent that, with the increasing size of their community and congregation, either a new facility or an addition was required. The religious sensibilities of the Congregation suggested that the built form to house their faith should be simple, unadorned but striking.
A series of planning exercises and financial cost studies determined that the most practical solution was to preserve the integrity of the existing facility and to create a new sanctuary for the congregation to hold their services. The existing facility was re-planned to accommodate other church related functions.
Architecturally, the form of the addition mirrors the function that it accommodates, in that the side walls and roof lines follow the sight lines that the seating geometry promote. The exterior walls are staggered to allow the introduction of natural light in such a manner as to prevent glare to both the congregation and the pastor.
Extensive use of tilt-concrete construction ensured both durability and economy, while the interior finishes promote a simple, calm and reflective atmosphere for the Congregation to enjoy.
